Thompson Square Perform the Johnny Cash Classic ‘Jackson’
Husband and wife duo Thompson Square covered another married duo's hit at a recent concert in Fresno, Calif. The country music pair -- Keifer Thompson and Shawna Thompson -- performed the Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash classic 'Jackson' for excited fans.
The song, in which a young couple "got married in a fever hotter than a pepper sprout" only to eventually yearn for getting away from each other and escaping into the excitement of a town called Jackson, was written in 1963 and first recorded by the Kingston Trio, then by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood. But the Grammy-winning Johnny and June Carter Cash version from 1967 is by far the definitive rendition, and Thompson Square borrowed from that rockabilly arrangement for a surprisingly faithful performance.
The couple first came to prominence with the release of their second single, 'Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not,' which proved a No. 1 hit. They are nominated for two 2012 CMA Awards in the categories of Vocal Duo of the Year and New Artist of the Year.
