4. Before moving to Nashville, he was a pre-law major.

McGraw's pre-law education came at Northeast Louisiana University (now the University of Louisiana at Monroe), but doesn't have fond scholastic memories.

"I got into school, picked up a guitar, joined a fraternity, and started sucking down kegs," McGraw told Esquire in 2006. "Law went out the window when my grades came back."

McGraw attended Northeast Louisiana University on a baseball scholarship, but he also learned to play guitar while there. When his mother moved to Jacksonville, Fla., McGraw went with her and briefly attended Florida Community College at Jacksonville. Then, on the day that his hero, Keith Whitley, died (May 9, 1989), he dropped out and headed to Nashville.
