A country queen and California newcomer take aim at Florida Georgia Line for the title of No. 1 song of July 2016, with 37 contenders behind them aiming to move up the monthly ToC Top 40 list. Carrie Underwood's "Church Bells" nears the top of the airplay charts, but that doesn't assure her a space on top of this list.

FGL's "H.O.L.Y" rides strong sales to a second straight month at No. 1. The duo's Dig Your Roots album is set for August, with the lead single set to peak in the the next few weeks. Like so many of their songs, expect it to remain near the top of sales charts for weeks to come. It also wins on that other metric ... "H.O.L.Y" is really good!

Jon Pardi's "Head Over Boots" has made ToC's Top 10 Songs of 2016 list, but isn't quite near the top of the Top 40 Songs of July 2016. Look for big leaps from songs by Cole Swindell and Zac Brown Band, plus debuts from Thomas Rhett and Blake Shelton. And of course share your opinions on which songs should be where!

The list of Top 40 Country Songs of July 2016 is compiled from Billboard chart data and sales figures, in addition to staff opinion and reader feedback.
