From Billy Crash Craddock’s suntan lotion applying hit ‘Rub It In’ to Brad Paisley’s wet and wild ‘Water,’ we present our Top 10 Summer Songs.
‘Groovy Little Summer Song’
In 2010, James Otto put an easygoing vibe on country radio with a ‘Groovy Little Summer Song.’ Otto, a part of Big and Rich’s MuzikMafia family, scored the No. 1 Billboard hit of the year in 2008 with ‘Just Got Started Loving You.’ This breakthrough record was produced by John Rich and Otto’s brother-in-law, Jay DeMarcus of Rascal Flatts. This cha-cha flavored selection is a groovy way to kick off our summer songs list.
‘Rub It In’
This 1974 summer song stirs up images of suntan lotion being spread in a slow and sexy motion on the beach. With one of the most infectious chorus lines ever, “Rub it in, rub it in,” the song’s melody was later used for Glade Plug-In commercials: “Plug it in, plug it in.” Billy “Crash” Craddock also scored No. 1 hits with ‘Ruby, Baby’ and ‘Broken Down In Tiny Pieces.’
With an opening line like “Winter sure was cold and miserable/ Couped up, shut down/ Baby it was pitiful / Anyway, it’s over now/ We owe it to ourselves to have a little fun,” this hot hit is a must on our list of summer songs! Phil Vassar hit the Top 10 in 2001 with ‘Six-Pack Summer,’ a song that seemed to be appreciated a bit more in the north, where people do dream of summer six-packs during those long, cold, snowy months.
‘Fishin’ in the Dark’
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band started as a country-folk-rock group in the ‘60s on the West Coast. Although they’ve tackled all styles of music successfully, their biggest mainstream hit was the No. 1 late-night favorite ‘Fishin’ in the Dark.’ The song follows a couple eager for spring to turn to summer so they can hang out by the river at night, count the stars and go “fishing” — so it easily fits on the list of summer songs that we like.
This summer song, a No. 1 Billboard hit from 1995, was accompanied by one of the funniest videos ever made in country music. Howie Mandel plays the role of an overworked man headed to the beach to see some pretty ladies, but instead he’s met by some ‘ugly’ chicks played by Jay Leno, Dick Clark, and David Hasselhoff. The video concludes with Black’s real wife, Lisa Hartman, appearing in fine summer form!
‘All Summer Long’
How many songwriters does it take to write a hit song? In this case, eight writers are listed on the credits to 2008’s ‘All Summer Long.’ Kid Rock merged Warren Zevon’s ‘Werewolves of London,’ Lynyrd Skynyrd’s ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ and a few of his own original lyrics to create a smash hit that sailed to No. 1 in eight countries and became his first Top 10 country hit. Kid Rock credited the writers of all the songs referenced to share in the success of what became a classic summer song.
Kenny Chesney has a catalog of songs that are perfect for backyard bashes and pool parties. From ‘No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem’ to ‘Beer in Mexico,’ his music is a must for any soundtrack of summer songs! ‘Summertime’ hit No. 1 in 2006, and these flip-flop perfect lyrics filled the airwaves: Perfect song on the radio / ‘Cause it’s one we know / It’s a smile / It’s a kiss / It’s a simple wine / It’s summertime!”
‘Redneck Yacht Club’
There’s no monthly dues to belong to this elite beer-drinkin’ group! ‘Redneck Yacht Club’ is a great anthem for regular “Joes” rockin’ the river. Led by president “Bob,” everyone’s welcome to bring their finest rusty vessel to be included in the floatin’ trailer park. Craig Morgan, known for other fun summer songs like ‘Bonfire’ and ‘Little Bit of Life,’ hit No. 2 on the Billboard charts with this one in 2005.
Over the past few years, Brad Paisley’s concerts have become a summer destination for many country music fans. It made perfect sense for Brad Paisley to co-write ‘Water,’ which would become the anthem of his H2O summer tour. This wet and wild story begins by sharing the fun of splashing in kiddie pools, to growing into a deeper appreciation for water with wet T-shirt contests and skinny-dipping.
Rascal Flatts tops our list of the Top 10 Country Summer Songs with ‘Summer Nights.’ This song sounds great cranked up by the campfire or pumped up in the truck, with a message that invites everyone to join the party: Let that Igloo cooler mark your piece of paradise / Holler if you’re ready for summer nights!” The song hit No. 2 on the Billboard country charts in 2009, and is still a feel-good summer song to country music and Rock fans alike.
