Rhonda and Trace Adkins have finally spoken out about their divorce, releasing a message to the public on Thursday (May 27).

The statement, which comes via Adkins' publicist, reads:

"Trace and Rhonda are united in ensuring that their children’s interests come first. They thank everyone for respecting their privacy as they work through this personal matter together."

The Adkins are splitting after almost 17 years of marriage. Rhonda filed for divorce in Nashville on Tuesday (March 25), citing irreconcilable differences. She has requested primary custody of the couple's three daughters, as well as child support, alimony and all of her legal fees.

It has been a tumultuous few months for the country star. After releasing an album of primarily love songs called 'Love Will...' and taking some acting gigs late in 2013, the singer's luck seemed to go downhill. In January, Adkins was involved in a verbal altercation on board a cruise ship, which prompted him to cut his trip short and check into rehab for alcoholism. The singer had been sober for 10 years prior to his slip. Then, in early February, Adkins' father passed away.

Taste of Country wishes the couple the best as they attempt to find common ground amidst this difficult and trying time.
