Zac Brown Band are in the middle of their 2018 Down the Rabbit Hole Tour, but that's not stopping them from working on new music. In an interview with Billboard, fiddle player Jimmy De Martini reveals the band has been recording new songs that might take them in a different direction on their forthcoming album.

De Martini shares that following their summer stadium tour, the plan is to "keep writing music and try to do a different type of music every time we put out a new album." He promises a musical departure from Zac Brown Band's 2017 release, Welcome Home.

"We have a bunch of songs in the bag — we actually have some halfway recorded," he says. "I’m not sure exactly what we're gonna do or when we're gonna record it, but it's kind of a surprise. I don't think I can reveal too much, but just say it's a different sound. We're stretching the boundaries again, for sure. Sonically it may vary from some stuff we've done in the past, but I think people like that about us. Overall we try to just make good music."

While Welcome Home was a return to ZBB's roots, their 2015 release, Jekyll + Hyde, showcased a versatile influence — the music was a blend of country, pop, rock and even EDM. The group's musicianship and ability to span multiple genres is showcased night after night on tour as they perform covers by the Beatles, Metallica, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and the Beastie Boys, among others.

"We have to make sure we get the setlist right so everybody's gonna have a good time," De Martini adds.

Zac Brown Band's tour runs through September.
