Richard Sturban, he's been with the Oakidge Boys for 53 years old. Uh, well into the 70s. And of course, William um, uh, Oakidge Boys just lost another member earlier this year. And I think we need to start off with Billy Dukes here talking uh so this week I'm talking about a really painful week truth about country music. And this is not what is or what isn't country music. That's a topic that people really like to talk about. It's about who is making country music. And don't worry, this isn't a diversity talk, at least not in the way you've heard it before. We're not going to talk about gender or race or heritage. I mean, that this is kind of more broad. Still really alarming, though. And I was inspired by Low Cash's tweets from several weeks ago. If you remember, they were snubbed when it came to the ACM awards >> a couple weeks ago. And they pointed out something that was sort of interesting to me that I I'll touch on in just a second. There's two types of country music artists who are dying. groups and duos. And Low Cash pointed this out. They shared that the last three years, the CMA vocal duo nominees of the year have all been the same. Same five nominees each year. Brooks and Dunn actually won last year, if you can believe it. They haven't released new music in quite some time. The last time a country duo enjoyed their very first number one hit, it was Low Cash back in 2016. So, this isn't the last time a country duo hit number one. It's time they hit number one for the very first time. Um, the last time a country group hit number one, it was in 2017 when Lanco did it. That was the last time a country group hit number one. >> Oh, yeah. Right. >> Like I kind of forgot. >> Who remembers this song, right? >> Greatest love story. >> Been a minute. Yeah. >> Established bands of chorus and duos have hit number one. Not a lot lately. Old Dominions done it a couple times. There's just not a pipeline of new duos and new groups in country music. We talk a little bit about Tiger Lily Gold, War and Treaty, Red Play, Strays. At best, they're having the equivalent of regional success. And the problem is, and I think it's a real problem, social media. I think we're so focused on the personality of an artist that you can't get the personalities of four or five guys across in a Tik Tok. >> You You think that's not true? I don't think that's true. No, I think it all boil it boils down to Is my microphone too loud? >> It No, you are too loud. No, you're good. >> It boils down to money. It boils down to money in two different aspects. The aspects are a of the bands and everybody has to split the money that's already being split 18 24 different ways and b the traveling. You have a you you book a show for parallel, you have to immediately pay for five guys hotel rooms, five guys flights, or you book a a show for one guy and you get the boom boom, it's all done and you don't split the money. Who Who in Mumford and Sons is getting paid? Like there's 80 of them. There's 80. >> That's always been the case, Evan. That's always been the case. I was about to say that has nothing to do with the popularity of those groups are doing logistics >> with digital and streaming. Countless artists are always talking about they don't make any money anyway from any of their records. So like now you split zero money into zero money like you get negative. I agree with Billy on I think it you rely so much on social media but then at the same time like I I do feel Matty and Taye for example I mean they've been nominated so many years where they kind of I remember we did an interview with them during CAMAS and they kindly said like at this point we don't even remotely expect to actually win these things at this point of their career but yet I do feel like they're pretty prominent on social media but it's like do they have the hook? do they have? You know, it's so much more of a like entertaining side of things than like the true artistry. >> You know, the one thing that I haven't, no one's mentioned yet is it's also hard to get along with someone. >> Yes. >> All the time, be with them all the time. Like we saw it with Florida Georgia Line. I mean, those dudes were making money hand over fist and still at some point in time it says it's just not worth it, you know? So you got to think about, you know, the part like we see the end part where like people are like super successful, but you got to remember there's that big leadup like all that time you spent together now for like, you know, family stuff like where you perform with your brother or sister or whatever it is, that's a little easier. But I think maybe it's just maybe the pain of I if I can do it by myself, why do it with somebody else? You know what I mean? But I think I think you're on to something, Billy. relationship issues. Evan Paul, you had something to talk about when it came to Eric Church. >> Yeah. So, at the recent ACM honors, he uh made a proclamation that Hardy is, he says, one of the best songwriters in Nashville to ever hold a pen. There we go. That's ever held a pen. So, that is not only like a current songwriter, now you're going back in time to like the evolution of country music. And you know, the chief, when the chief, I always say when the chief speaks, people listen, you know. So, me personally, I I tend to agree with that. I think Hardy is a great storyteller, and I know country music's rooted in storytelling, but I feel like he has a way of telling a story that progresses over three verses, but it's still done before four minutes. And I think he's doing things in a way that he's testing all the boundaries. Like I thought one beer with Laura and Elena was testing the boundary when I was talking about like getting pregnant, going to CVS and like drinking beer and stuff. But then like when it started getting into like weight in the truck, I mean you look at like he's written like uh More Than My Hometown for Morgan Wallen. He's wrote One Beer, Give Heaven Some Hell, Truck Bed. He wrote God's country. He was the co-writer of God's country. And you have to say it like that, too. I mean, you can try to say it other ways. And the crazy thing is is, you know, Evan Paul, I know you have a bunch of people in studio on Taste of Country Nights. And when you talk to them and you've asked them like, you know, who is somebody else you, you know, want to work with, you enjoyed working with, I'm telling you, Hardy gets named by everybody. Every I don't care like what like musical country genre you come from, everyone wants to work with them. So to me, it's almost like when you talk to like football players and they talk about other football players, balln knowowers know. You know what I'm saying? And musicians know. So the fact that everybody wants to work with Hardy seems like it makes a lot of sense. >> Dude, one time I saw Hardy uh here at the Oh, go ahead, Billy. He looked up and he goes and in the third verse you can you can turn it to where you look up and they're gone cuz your wife left you and took them. I know Scotty McCra is announcing some dates. We just got Eric Church and Riley Green. This is the time of year where you get all sorts of big tour announcements for early 2026. So set some money aside. Don't go wild over the weekend and go support your favorite country artist while tickets are still cheap because the guy at Live Nation says that tickets should be much much more expensive. And I'm not sure I disagree with him. >> Oh my god. Stop. >> Stop. >> That's coming from someone who would go to concerts for free for work. >> Supply and demand. It's supply and demand, right? You shouldn't This isn't New York rent. You can't have a a ceiling on it. If shows are selling out, that means concert tickets are too cheap. But >> so I digress. This what's it? I forget the guy's name. He's like the CEO of Live Nation. >> Huge And yeah, he's like when you look at the the ticket price to a Laker game is $72. Okay. Like the most people aren't going to sporting events either. Like th those numbers are starting to go down as people want to stay home, save money, and they don't want to spend $15 on a beer, which is the same thing at the concert. Uh to me, man, you you're thinking of just the concert ticket, but you're also you gota throw in the beer, the merch that you're going to do. Don't forget the babysitter that charges you like $25 an hour to sit in your house and >> drink beer. You can go without merch. >> That's not that's not live like >> No, but but it's all part of it. And so for you to tell me, and by the way, Evan, ask artists when they come in here. We can both ask artists when we have interviews. How much money are you getting from the ticket sales? It's not much. So >> 18%. >> That money is not going to the artist. So like you think, oh, I'm gonna go out and support my favorite artist. You are for a little bit of it. That merch money goes much more to them. So that's why I'm like concert tickets are too low. >> They should higher. >> Listen, I hear you. It's not a popular opinion, but laws of supply and demand, basic commerce here say that concert tickets might be a little bit too soft. But don't forget, a lot of these tickets get bought up right as they're released by these little ticket farms or whatever, the bots and everything, and then they turn around and sell them on StubHub and all this stuff for three times the price. So maybe that's where some of that demand is coming from because they snatch up all those tickets right away. I know that like Kid Rock was working with Donald Trump on getting something going on that. I don't know about y'all, but I haven't seen it, but it'd be nice to get that kind of going down the other way. And I always hate it when it's always like these rich CEOs that tell me that things aren't expensive. Bro, yes they are, man. I'm making my kids use like their second side of their paper at school and stuff, but I'm cheap. All right, last thing I asked the trivia. I got worked up there. I apologize. Here's the trivia question I asked. During the 1975 CMA Awards, Charlie Rich announced the winner of the entertainer of the year. And when he did that, he then set the card on fire. So, he wasn't able to see Charlie Rich's reaction. Later, John Rich would say or Charlie Rich would say he was on um a number of drugs and he maybe he was drunk and that's why he did it. He was just trying to make a joke. He wasn't really upset about John Denver. He ended up kind of losing his career after that moment.
