Luke Bryan was first and Eric Church was the last performance at the 2018 CMA Awards, and in between came a whole mess of country sub-genres. Traditional country, pop-country, bluegrass and country-rock were all represented at the annual awards show. It was a diverse, emotional night filled with a heck of a lot of ballads.

What separated this year's CMA Awards performances from years past was the depth of songs. Jason Aldean, Brett Young, Carrie Underwood, Garth Brooks and Kacey Musgraves were some of the artists who picked slow songs for the show. Wednesday night (Nov. 14) did offer a few all-out jams, of course — Keith Urban and Brad Paisley were two who were particularly rowdy. The all-star Ricky Skaggs jam was something to behold. We loved Pistol Annies.
