The two nominees in the 2016 presidential race squared off in their first live debate on Monday night (Sept. 26), and a number of country stars turned to Twitter to share their thoughts on the televised contest.

Republican nominee Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton faced off in a debate moderated by NBC's Lester Holt, with questions focused on America's direction, how to best achieve prosperity and how to best secure America. An audience that was anticipated to number near 100 million viewers tuned in to watch the historic event, and country stars were among the many Americans who vented online during the course of the evening.

Brandy Clark shared her thoughts on the much-anticipated moment, while Billy Ray Cyrus and Jaren Johnston of the Cadillac Three made wry observations about the debate. Natalie Maines proposed a unique drinking game to pass the time, and Chely Wright defended one of the candidates against a common charge. But it fell to Granger Smith, posting as his alter ego, Earl Dibbles, Jr., to make a suggestion that may be the most bi-partisan solution we've heard yet in this entire election season.

Clinton and Trump are scheduled for two more debates on Oct. 9 and Oct. 19, and a vice presidential debate is slated to take place on Oct. 4. Americans will go to the polls and elect the next president of the United States on Nov. 8.
