Craig Campbell, ‘I’ll Be Home for Christmas’ – Song Review
Craig Campbell proves to be a more than capable balladeer on his new version of 'I'll Be Home for Christmas.' The 'Fish' singer shows a surprising amount of control and patience as he gets through the classic lyrics.
"I'll be home for Christmas / You can count on me / Please have snow and mistletoe / And presents under the tree," he sings. It's not quite as rich and warm as Bing Crosby's version, but whose remake has been? "Christmas time will find us / Where the love light beams / I'll be home for Christmas / If only in my dreams."
Covering the most popular Christmas hits can be a lose-lose proposition. After all, it's rare someone will top the established original. At best, one hopes to bring the song to a new group of people while not turning off the more conservative listeners. Campbell does that with relative ease and shows a new side to his talent. He's not quite in the crooner category a la Joe Nichols, but this song proves he's beyond an average picker.
