Granger Smith was rushed to the hospital on Friday night (Dec. 2) after suffering a terrible fall during a concert performance in New Jersey.

According to a statement from his publicist, the rising country star was performing at the Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, N.J., on Friday night. He was standing on a monitor when it unexpectedly gave way, sending the singer-songwriter plummeting from the stage, where he crashed into a metal barricade.

A fan in attendance captured the moment in a video he posted to Twitter.

Smith recovered and got back onstage almost immediately, joking, “It must have been a city boy that put that up there.”

Incredibly, he was able to play the rest of his set through excruciating pain, finishing up with a crowd singalong to his hit, “Backroad Song.”

Smith was taken to a nearby emergency room after the show, and after an evaluation, he was transferred and admitted to a Level 1 trauma center in New Brunswick, N.J., where doctors confirmed two completely separated broken ribs, as well as a punctured and partially collapsed lung.

Despite his serious injuries, the latest reports from Smith’s doctors are encouraging, according to the statement, and the artist hopes to return home to his family in Texas to rest soon.

Smith has canceled all of his shows and appearances through the weekend. Further information about subsequent shows is to be announced.
