It’s been five years since rapper Kanye West did his thing and interrupted Taylor Swift‘s acceptance speech at the 2009 VMAs, but he’s still not done talking about it. Now, he reveals how he coped with all the negativity after his infamous stage rush.

It was one of country’s most shocking moments when West stage-bombed the young singer, shouting, “Beyonce has one of the best videos of all time!,” which led to huge amounts of criticism from even President Obama. And the rapper tells director Steve McQueen in their Interview chat that he used three coping mechanisms to get over the ordeal.

When McQueen asked West how he dealt with it all mentally, physically and spiritually, West answered, “It’s funny that you would say ‘mentally, physically, spiritually’ because my answer before you even said that was going to be ‘god, sex, and alcohol.’”

Added West, “Well, I don’t have an addictive personality, so that means that I can lean on what might be someone else’s vice just enough to make it through to the next day. You know, just enough religion, a half-cup of alcohol with some ice in it and a nice chaser, and then…a lot of sex. And then I’d make it to the next week.”

There have been a lot of weeks since the VMAs controversy, and it seems that West is trying to move on. However, it will remain an incident that impacted both West and Swift in major ways. It gave them both a ton of publicity and taught them both some huge lessons — including “don’t ever interrupt an acceptance speech.”

Swift has been a little less vocal about the upsetting moment, but it seems she’s taken it all to heart; the ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’ hitmaker keeps a framed photo of the moment in her Nashville penthouse as a reminder that life is full of interruptions.
