Kelly Clarkson Refutes Claims Made About Her in Clive Davis’ New Autobiography

It’s safe to say that Kelly Clarkson won’t be buying a copy of famous music executive Clive Davis’ autobiography, ‘The Soundtrack of My Life.’ In it, Davis allegedly writes about his relationship with Clarkson, sharing how she burst into tears when she didn’t get what she wanted. Clarkson took to her social media accounts and issued a lengthy response that paints the COO at Sony Music Entertainment as a bully.

Entertainment Weekly revealed a section of the book that claims Clarkson began hysterically sobbing when she was told ‘Since U Been Gone’ would be included on her 2004 album ‘Breakaway.’ “Not true at all,” Clarkson said in her lengthy statement.

She continues:

His stories and songs are mixed up. I did want more guitars added to the original demo and Clive did not. Max, Luke and I still fought for the bigger sound and we prevailed and I couldn’t be more proud of the life of that song. But, yes, I did cry in his office once. I cried after I played him a song I had written about my life called “Because Of You.” I cried because he hated it and told me verbatim that I was a “sh**ty writer who should be grateful for the gifts that he bestows upon me.” He continued on about how the song didn’t rhyme and how I should just shut up and sing. This was devastating coming from a man who I, as a young girl, considered a musical hero and was so honored to work with.
But I continued to fight for the song and the label relented. And it became a worldwide hit. He didn’t include that in the book.

Another recap of an excerpt from the book states that Davis and Clarkson’s relationship reached a breaking point when she wanted to write more songs for ‘My December.’ Davis said there wasn’t a hit and the album wouldn’t be a success. Clarkson points out that it went Platinum and was very necessary for her on a personal level.

“He doesn’t mention how he stood up in front of his company at a convention and belittled me and my music and completely sabotaged the entire project. It never had a chance to reach it’s full potential,” the pop-country songstress explains.

It’s not clear if Clarkson read an advance copy of the book, or if she was just responding to reports about it that various media outlets published, but one thing is clear — she won’t be bullied.

“I refuse to be bullied and I just have to clear up his memory lapses and misinformation for myself and for my fans. It feels like a violation,” she says to begin her letter, adding, “Growing up is awesome because you learn you don’t have to cower to anyone – even Clive Davis.”

The singer’s most recent album was ‘Greatest Hits: Chapter One’ on RCA and 19 Entertainment. RCA is a division of Sony Music. The album includes her duet with Vince Gill, the Top 40 country single ‘Don’t Rush.’

Update: Clive Davis has since responded to Clarkson’s public rant. Read what he had to say here.
