Kristian Bush turns in the season’s first irreverent Christmas song with “Thinking About Drinking for Christmas,” an easy-to-follow holiday singalong that serves as reminder to throw an extra sixer/bottle/jug into the cart before relatives show up.

The song is left of Bush’s well-mannered wheelhouse, but it sounds like he’s boozed away a few Dec. 25ths. The second verse gets to the heart of the matter — despite good intentions, family can drive us nuttier than fruit cake.

“My cousin showed up with a bottle of peppermint shine / And tomorrow I’ll be cursing him for this migraine of mine / If Aunt Alice talks any longer / I’m gonna need something a little bit stronger,” Bush sings.

Throughout the song one hears the smile on his face. “Thinking About Drinking for Christmas” is a song recorded tongue-in-cheek (or not) … surely nobody boozes to keep from going insane during the stressful season.

“I’m thinking about drinking for Christmas / Filling my glass to the top with some holiday wishes / It doesn’t matter what you’re sipping / It’s a gift, that keeps on giving / Just thinking about drinking for Christmas.”

“Thinking About Drinking for Christmas” fits well with the playful brand of country music Bush has started to build since focusing on his solo career. He understands that not every song needs to be an instant classic. A song that makes you smile for a few moments is just as good.

Why Fans Will Love It: Bush's song combines two great American traditions: Christmas and beer.

Key Lyrics: "It doesn’t matter what you’re sipping / It’s a gift, that keeps on giving / Just thinking about drinking for Christmas."

Did You Know?: Bush, Brett James and singer Chris Young wrote this song. It first appeared in live shows in 2013.
