Budding superstar Luke Bryan couldn't have been more surprised when he won Entertainer of the Year at the 2013 ACM Awards on Sunday night (April 7). The stunned singer cried as he took to the podium to accept the honor. He says they were tears of both happiness and sorrow, as he was thinking of his late brother and sister.

"What's important is that my family has dealt with a lot of tragedy in my life, with me losing my older brother and my older sister," Bryan told reporters backstage at the show (quote via the Boot).

Bryan's brother Chris died in a car accident in 1996. His sister Kelly passed away in 2007 after being stricken with a brain tumor.

"That's the first thing you [think], that they're in heaven smiling down on moments like this," the singer added. "That's what is amazing. We can rejoice in the good things in life as a family and all of our friends."

Bryan told reporters that now that's he's fulfilled his career goal of being Entertainer of the Year, he wants to keep looking for new opportunities. "I just want to do what I can to take country music to a whole other level. I truly love being on stage. I love lighting people's faces up. That's the most special thing you can do."

Not quite everything went smoothly for the singer on Sunday night. In a video he posted to YouTube thanking his fans, he admitted that he'd slipped up on the words to his new single. “It was awesome getting to do the new single ‘Crash My Party,’ which I messed up the first lyric," he revealed. "So go download it so you can hear the proper lyric.”
