Ashley Monroe

Ashley Monroe has become one of the most-respected female singer-songwriters in country music over the course of a long, slow climb in Nashville. She moved to Music City with her mom after her father died of cancer, and scored a songwriting deal when she was 14. She recorded an album titled 'Satisfied' for Sony in 2006, but when two singles failed to have an impact, it was shelved. Monroe made a career for herself as a songwriter and performer, and finally hit the spotlight when she formed Pistol Annies with her longtime friend Miranda Lambert and Angaleena Presley in 2011. After they went on hiatus, she signed with Warner Music Nashville and released the highly-acclaimed 'Like a Rose' album in 2013, working with producer Vince Gill. The follow-up, 2015's 'The Blade,' was also critically hailed, with reviewers praising the winning combination of Monroe's sharp songwriting and angelic voice. Monroe scored her first No. 1 hit in 2015 with "Lonely Tonight," a duet with Blake Shelton. The song was nominated for a Grammy for Best Country Duo/Group Performance.

Songs like Ashley Monroe's 'Weed Instead of Roses' are a litmus test for how politically incorrect country radio programmers are willing to be. Can you promote smoking pot on the radio? It's been done before, albeit more subtly. Monroe's verses cover it up with whipped cream, chains and lingerie. This isn't your mama's country music.

With Ashley Monroe, it's barely a cliche. Superstar singers are throwing themselves at her. There was a duet with Ronnie Dunn early in her career. Train's Pat Monahan and Vince Gill have also come calling, and she regularly writes with rocker Brendan Benson. Monroe's voice is one successful musicians have wanted to warm up to for over a decade.

It's how music fans imagine every album to be recorded, but rarely is it a reality. Instead of sequestering individual musicians in micro-studios or recording each layer of a song one by one, Ashley Monroe recorded 'Like a Rose' live and in the round. The result? A project that fans and critics are fighting to pile with praise, and one that's gathering her attention across the internet.
