Little Big Town tore it up on the March 25 edition of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon with a stirring performance of their new song "Girl Crush."

Band members Kimberly Schlapman, Jimi Westbrook, Karen Fairchild and Phillip Sweet performed the 'controversial' hit in front of a live studio audience. When they finished, they were greeted with thunderous applause.

"I got a girl crush / Hate to admit it but / I got a hard rush / It's slowing down / I got it real bad / Want everything she has / That smile and that midnight laugh / She's giving you now," the "Girl Crush" lyrics go.

The catchy tune has been given heat from some radio listeners who feel that the song is promoting a gay agenda. Little Big Town addressed the controversy head-on during an interview with popular country radio host Bobby Bones.

“Is it frustrating to you that here is your song — that is one of the Top 10 sellers for weeks and weeks and weeks — and people on the radio are still afraid to play it because they think it’s a ‘lesbian song?’” Bones asked. “It would drive me insane!”

"Just the fact that we’re still discussing that, number one, there’s so many problems with that whole issue,” Fairchild answered. "That’s just shocking to me, the close-mindedness of that, when that’s just not what the song was about. But what if it were? It’s just a greater issue of listening to a song for what it is."

However, many believe that the controversy is overblown, and fellow stars Reba McEntire, Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert have all openly supported the song. McEntire posted a picture of herself wearing a hat that said "Girl Crush" on Facebook. She captioned the photo, "Tipping my hat to my friends Little Big Town for their single #girlcrush!” Shelton and Lambert uploaded a cute picture of themselves on Instagram with the caption, “We love @littlebigtown #girlcrush."
