Randy Travis has been hospitalized and is in critical condition after complications from a heart ailment. The singer was admitted to a Texas hospital on Sunday (July 7).

According to his publicist, Travis was recently diagnosed with a viral cardiomyopathy and the hospitalization is a result of complications. According to WiseGeek.org, a viral cardiomyopathy is a virus that weakens the heart. The severity can vary, and further details about Travis' case were not made available.

The health scare comes at a time when the 'Three Wooden Crosses' singer seemed poised to be bouncing back after a number of legal and personal struggles. He'd pledged to give up drinking late last year, and he looked revitalized at the 2013 CMT Music Awards in June.

His new song 'Tonight I'm Playing Possum' with Joe Nichols received warm critical praise, in addition to a positive reception from fans.
