Chance McKinney Breaks New Ground With ‘Everybody Wants You’ [Exclusive Premiere]
Chance McKinney is shooting high with his new music. Not content to simply release new product, the singer is looking to create an entirely new sub-genre of country music with his new EP, I, and he's letting fans hear one of the new songs early via this Taste of Country exclusive.
McKinney sings of yearning for a woman who is desired by everyone in "Everybody Wants You," but the lyric contains a clever twist on the premise. He and his team knew they were onto something from the very start.
"When we first heard the song it was a jaw-dropping moment," he recalls. "Everyone in the room threw their hands up in the air and said, 'That's it!' although I'm sure there were a few more expletives used, but that's the gist of it. We knew. We knew we had a hit. A lot of people guess what hits are... but this time, we knew. Every girl wants to feel like the girl in the song and every guy knows what it's like to be that guy. I think I love the twist in it the best. When a song gets you moving in one direction and then slams into reverse, but totally makes sense, I love that. And this is that, and more."
Musically the track employs diverse influences, juxtaposing swirling synth soundscapes and electric guitars, with an unexpected, sweeping symphonic section thrown in for good measure.
"'Everybody Wants You' evolved into an experience in the studio. It's almost theatrical it's so moving," McKinney says. "When you listen to a song and get lost in the lyric like you're living, or have lived it, you know it's special."
McKinney is not new to audiences; he was formerly one-half of the duo Nathan Chance, and he also won CMT's Music City Madness competition with his song, "Be Real." He's released two previous albums and shared stages with Blake Shelton, Luke Bryan, Dierks Bentley, Sunny Sweeney, Alan Jackson, Ronnie Dunn, Darius Rucker, Dwight Yoakam and more, but his ambitions run deeper than that. He's created a new sound he dubs "industrialized country" for I, an EP that examines people's relationships with work and how they make a living.
"Industrialized country is a country lyric and a country vocal mixed with metal guitars, pop structure and industrial layers," he explains, but he's not talking about the same old drum loops or sampled beats.
“The backgrounds are created by hammers hitting nails. We will build our loops with the things that people associate with work,” McKinney says.
I is set for release on Friday (May 18). It is currently available for pre-order. For more information about Chance McKinney, visit his official website, or follow him on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
