Watch Chris Stapleton’s Stunning Chris Cornell Tribute, ‘The Keeper’
Chris Stapleton was among the all-star lineup of musicians who gathered together to pay tribute to late singer Chris Cornell in California on Wednesday night (Jan. 16). The country superstar gave one of the highlight performances of the night with "The Keeper."
Click on the video above to see Stapleton take the stage at the Forum in Inglewood, Calif., armed only with an acoustic guitar to perform the track, which Cornell wrote for the 2011 film Machine Gun Preacher. The song also appeared on his 2011 acoustic solo album, Songbook. Stapleton delivers a scorching, impassioned version that serves as an apt tribute to the late Soundgarden singer, who was found dead on May 18, 2017, after hanging himself in his hotel room following a concert in Detroit. The singer had battled depression for much of his life.

Stapleton was part of the bill for I Am the Highway: A Tribute to Chris Cornell. Jimmy Kimmel hosted the tribute concert, which raised money for the Chris and Vicky Cornell Foundation and the Epidermolysis Bullosa Medical Research Foundation.
Cornell's friends and former bandmates in Soundgarden, Audioslave and Temple of the Dog were on hand to pay their own musical respects, as well as Foo Fighters, Metallica, Ryan Adams and more.
Stapleton and Brandi Carlile also joined Temple of the Dog for a powerful rendition of "Hunger Strike."
