Merle Haggard's entry to the Top 100 Country Songs list was banned by radio stations who disagreed with his politics. An episode of CMT's 'Controversy' revealed that while the song was hailed by then-President Nixon, others thought his message was divisive. Haggard says he wasn't trying to write a political song, but 'Okie From Muskogee' became an anthem for the short-haired and clean-shaven.
