Songwriters File Lawsuit Against Carrie Underwood Over ‘Something in the Water’
Carrie Underwood could be in hot water over one of her biggest hits. A pair of Canadian songwriters have filed a lawsuit against the country star, claiming that they wrote a song titled "Something in the Water" that bears a striking resemblance to her hit of the same name.
Georgia Lyons and Ronald McNeill allege that they composed their song in 2012 and sent it to Underwood's team to see if she'd be interested in cutting it, but didn't hear back. The songwriters claim that the version of "Something in the Water" that appears on Underwood's Greatest Hits: Decade #1 album is “structurally and lyrically identical, and substantially similar melodically” to the track they penned, according to the Tennessean.

Lyons and McNeill further claim that the superstar is guilty of copyright infringement and are asking for a jury trial and to receive any profits generated from the song.
The Underwood, Chris DeStefano and Brett James penned "Something in the Water" was a massive success for Underwood, putting her at the top of Billboard's Hot Country Songs for seven weeks and the Hot Christian Songs chart for more than 20 consecutive weeks. In addition to receiving critical claim, the powerful song also earned the singer a Grammy Award for Best Country Solo Performance in 2015.
Underwood has not issued a statement regarding the lawsuit or the songwriters' claims. She and Brad Paisley successfully defended themselves against a similar infringement claim against their duet, "Remind Me," in 2016.
She's been busy, though — her new Sunday Night Football theme has been airing since NFL football launched on Sept. 10. She's also written a new song titled "The Champion" that will play leading up to the 2018 Super Bowl.
“They always feel like they make everything bigger and more grand than the year before,” Underwood says about being a part of SNF. “Here I feel like they wanted a theme of unity amongst all the sports fans. Everybody’s tuning in. Everybody’s got their teams that they’re rooting for.”
Underwood will co-host the 2017 CMA Awards with Paisley in November.
