Maren Morris Says Country Music’s Restrictive Mold Is ‘Bulls–t’
As Maren Morris' star power continues to rise, the "Girl" singer has found herself speaking freely more often, especially when it comes to the state of country music.
"I don't know who has made these scriptures for women in country music to be super religious and they need to be super conservative and never show their body," Morris says in a new video interview with Genius.
"I'm like, 'Are you giving me a run for my money right now?' Like Dolly (Parton's) outfits back in the day were amazing," she continues, referring to some of Parton's more risque costumes. "There is such a stupid mold, that even we ourselves are trying to fit into, and it's bulls--t."
"Girl," Morris' new single, encourages women to be themselves and not try to fit into some sort of pre-conceived notion of how they should look or act. And to own it when a bad day rolls along.
"It's completely natural to feel like, 'Today, I suck,'" she acknowledges. "That's ok. Let me just say it out loud and get it out into the universe and not hold it in."
Of course, Morris is doing everything but sucking at the moment. Following a successful Grammy Awards where she performed with Dolly Parton, she will kick off her Girl: The World Tour on March 9 in Chicago. Joining her on the road on the tour will be fellow power women Cassadee Pope and RaeLynn.
