Freddy Fender's bad luck resume begins on Christmas Eve 1995, when he returned home from church to find his house was on fire. Fortunately, nobody was hurt in the blaze, but that wasn't the case a decade earlier when two of his band members were killed in a bus accident. In 1981, the bus crossed the median and crashed into a semi truck traveling in the opposite direction. There is also a bankruptcy and jail time served for possessing a small amount of marijuana that fans point to when discussing Fender's tough luck. Three years in jail does seem a tad excessive for the crime, especially in light of recent cases involving Willie Nelson. Fender died of lung cancer in 2006.
