Lainey Wilson's father Brian is as tough as nails and a compliment is hard to come by from the fifth-generation farmer.

In a chat with Kelleigh Bannen on Today's Country, Wilson shares that she doesn't get a ton of praise from her father when it comes to her music, but that's just the way he is.

He did, however, let it slip that her recent single is something special.

"My daddy don't pass out compliments, I'll tell you that," Wilson explains. "But the other day he told me - we were sitting on my porch - and he said, 'It don't get no better than "Somewhere Over Laredo", I'm telling you, it don't get no better than that.'"

Perhaps he laid it on a bit thick because Wilson assumed this can only mean that she has peaked in her career.

"I was like, great, so now it's downhill from here," she jokingly recounts.

Lainey Wilson Has High Hopes for "Somewhere Over Laredo"

Wilson agrees with her father and feels that her recently released single is something she treasures. She hopes that it will be one of those tracks that is around for along time.

"I hope it's gonna be around," she says hopefully. "I hope people are singing it at karaoke 30 years from now."

Lainey Wilson Is a Daddy's Girl

The last few years have been a whirlwind for Wilson and even though she has shot into the spotlight, she remains grounded by maintaining a strong relationship with her parents, Brian and Michelle Wilson.

In the midst of her snowballing career, the Louisiana native almost lost her father due to multiple health issues. In 2022, he spent two months in a hospital battling a fungal infection that took out the left side of his face, including his eye.

He underwent nine surgeries in just a month and a half. To make things worse, he suffered a stroke in the middle of all of this. As Wilson puts it, "he's not supposed to be here."

She wrote "Those Boots (Deddy's Song)" for her father that same year. It's one of the few songs he's complimented her on.

"I played it for him and he was tapping his toe, so I was like, 'alright, check,'" she explains to Taste of Country. "But then afterwards, he said, 'That's pretty dang good.' So I was like, 'We're getting somewhere.'"

Truth be told, Wilson is a stellar songwriter and it's gotta be hard to pick a favorite song from her catalog. Perhaps, if her dad started complimenting her songs, he'd never stop.
