Maren Morris’ ‘Girl’ Tops Country Albums Chart
Maren Morris set a country music streaming record on her way to a No. 1 country album with Girl. The singer's latest album topped the country album chart after its first week of sales and cracked the Top 5 all-genre chart.
Girl rests at No. 4 on the Billboard 200, but her 46,000 equivalent album units sold was good enough for No. 1 on the Top Country Album chart, beating albums by Luke Combs, Florida Georgia Line and Dan + Shay. Of those 46,000, just 25,000 were traditional sales — a remarkable ratio for a country album, one good enough to set a record.
Per Billboard, Girl had the largest ever streaming week for a studio country album by a woman. Her nearly 24 million streams topped the 14.4 million streams by Carrie Underwood for Cry Pretty in September 2018. Cry Pretty sold 266,000 equivalent albums with 251,000 being traditional album sales (physical and digital).
In 2016 Morris' Hero album also hit No. 1 on the Top Country Album chart with 45,000 equivalents sold. Of those, 37,000 were tradition album sales. The double-platinum hit "My Church" had reached its peak on the airplay chart by the time she released Hero, whereas "Girl" is just inside the Top 30 currently. However Morris has been on a heavy media blitz, which has included appearances on Saturday Night Live, several late night and morning network talk shows and an interview with Taste of Country.
Combs' This One's for You was the No. 2 album on the country albums chart, followed by FGL's Can't Say I Aint' Country and Dan + Shay's self-titled album. Kacey Musgraves' Golden Hour rounds out the Top 5.
