Every week, the #LetTheGirlsPlay show at the Listening Room in Nashville closes with a cover song. Recently five singers teamed up to recreate the drama and mood of “Girl Next Door,” a hit song from Brandy Clark.

The acoustic cover features Karla Davis, Anna Vaus, Kalie Shorr, Liddy Clark and Kim Paige. Shorr takes the first verse before Liddy Clark starts the chorus. It’s the harmonies that come next that really take the song to the next level, however. While Clark sings the high parts, Shorr holds down the bottom end. Later, the others join in to create a two, three or ever four-part mix.

Davis’ work on guitar also separates this song from so many other Song Suffragettes covers. The talented singer and songwriter covers the licks that make Brandy Clark’s song so unique. She sets the mood for this smokey, sassy and somehow sultry country song.

Clark has been a major influence on women in country music through her own songs and others she’s written for artists like Kacey Musgraves and Jennifer Nettles. Vaus, Taste of Country’s #LetTheGirlsPlay artist of the month for October, says the Washington native is her most important influence. She loves the way she delivers a strong message with wit.

Taste of Country was an early supporter and continues to be an advocate for women at every level of country music. Look for a featured interview with a #LetTheGirlsPlay artist once a month, live covers once a week, and various other special content regularly on the site.
