Who Did It Better? Kesha and Farewell Angelina Sing ‘House of the Rising Sun’
Kesha's cover of "House of the Rising Sun" may have come first, but country fans are going to be hard to convince that she topped Farewell Angelina's acoustic creation.
The 2017 Taste of Country RISERS offer a haunting version of the traditional folk song, but the electro-pop singer's version did come courtesy of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. It's a clash of country vs. pop music that fans of both will have to sort out. Watch 'em both, then pick your favorite in the poll below.
The Farewell Angelina version of the song was actually filmed in February 2017 during the 2017 RISERS video and photo shoot. The country quartet won the Taste of Country Hot Seat, which means fans picked them as a choice RISERS act. The girls learned the song just days before being asked to film a live performance, and they owned it. Four layers of harmonies gel into one cohesive voice for this stirring rendition of a folk song the Animals made famous decades ago.
Kesha's version is also stripped down and raw, but she amplifies her guitars a little more and is aided by a drum kit. Her pop runs are also beautiful, and like Lauren Lucas, Nicole Witt and company she holds back no emotion in telling a story that's easily forgotten in 21st century America.
