Police say 19-year-old Santino William Legan opened fire on Sunday (July 28) at the Gilroy Garlic Festival, a food and entertainment festival held south of San Jose, Calif., killing three people and leaving a dozen more injured.

NBC Bay Area later confirmed a death toll of three, including a 6-year-old boy. The shooter also died. Several country artists were on the Sunday's entertainment lineup at the Gilroy Garlic Festival, including Waterloo Revival, Caylee Hammack, King Calaway and McKenna Faith.

As of 7:30PM local time Sunday, the situation was still active, per police. Witnesses told NBC Bay Area station that a gunman was in his 30s, wearing camouflage and well armed. They describe hearing what sounded like firecrackers for a lengthy period of time, but it's not clear if the apprehended gunman was a lone shooter. Witnesses also describe seeing many people on the ground, but no one could say if they were struck or just taking cover.

The Mercury News reports the shooting started at 5:30PM — about 30 minutes before the festival closed down for the day. KTVU-TV reporter Elissa Harrington reported hearing additional shots at 6:03PM local time and later tweeted photos of a search.

George Birge from Waterloo Revival checked in on Facebook around 7:30PM local time, letting fans know his band and crew are safe and accounted for. King Calaway also let fans and family know they are OK with a tweet and Faith did the same on Instagram Stories. Hammack also let fans know she's doing well via Instagram.

Gilroy Garlic Festival was founded in 1979 and takes place at Christmas Hill Park, 30 miles south of San Jose. Reuters reports that a police spokesman confirmed casualties, but did not say how many.
