Granger Smith Reveals New ‘River’ Tattoo
Granger Smith has memorialized his son, River, with a new tattoo. The singer was spotted with new ink on his right forearm during his set at the LakeShake Music Festival on Sunday (June 23). River died earlier this month after an accident at the family's home in Texas.
The tattoo reads "River" in black script along the bottom of his right arm. While far from covered in ink, Smith has other tattoos and then he adds even more when playing his alter ego Earl Dibbles Jr. onstage, as he did to close his show in Chicago.
Fans immediately noticed the new tattoo, which held extra special meaning as he sang a song called "Heaven Bound Balloons" in memory of the 3-year-old boy. You can see a portion of that performance at the above video.
River Smith drowned in the family's swimming pool in early June and died on June 6. Granger and his wife Amber would later share a few details about what happened in a YouTube video, saying that their lives changed in the blink of an eye while the family was out in the yard playing. Two days passed between the incident and the boy's death. The family was able to donate his organs to save the lives of others in need.
In the days and weeks since, Smith has mostly stayed off social media and says he'll refrain from doing meet-and-greets at concerts now that he's resumed touring. The entire family hit the road with him last week for a slate of dates through the midwest. Amber Smith has shared a little more on her social media pages. While in Chicago, the family visited the largest T-Rex ever discovered in honor of River.
"Every single thing reminds me of him, and all I can think about is how he would love exploring and seeing all that we are seeing," she writes.
The singer's team created a T-shirt for fans to purchase in memory of River. All proceeds from the shirt will go to the Dell Children's Medical Center in Texas. People reports that Smith is expected to deliver a check believed to be over $200,000 to the hospital on Tuesday.
