If you've been on social media, you might have been seeing Brandi Carlile, Amanda Shires and Maren Morris posting secretive collaborative snaps.

The talk of a new band dubbed the Highwomen first emerged during an interview Shires had with Louisville radio station WFPK on Jan. 9. She spoke about the fact that she wanted to approach Carlile for the project.

See What the Highwomen Are Up To:

The concept originated from the Highwaymen, which was a country supergroup in the '80s featuring Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson. Carlile shared a picture of her new tattoo with the caption, "It's not what you think ... but we all need it."

On March 5, Shires celebrated her birthday at Nashville's RCA Studio A. She also shared videos in which she appeared to be recording with Carlile, Morris, Jason Isbell and famed producer Dave Cobb, with other music industry insiders in attendance.

Morris added to her collaborator's posts, writing, "Thank you for diving into (famed songwriter Natalie) Hemby’s and my old folky demos for some of this. Love you two.”

Carlile has previously said in interviews when asked about the collaborations that anyone is welcome, and this isn't a man-hating group.

So, how are these people connected besides the fact that they're in country music? Morris performed at Carlile's all-female Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Festival, and they sang a duet on Morris' song "Common." Shires is married to Isbell, who has worked with all three musicians. Cobb co-produced Shires' most recent studio album, To The Sunset, as well as working with Carlile on her Grammy-winning album By The Way, I Forgive You.

After a social media troll wrote saying that the group are Pistol Annies copycats, Carlile swiftly replied, "You’re the reason we're doing this."
