Kelsea Ballerini brought one of the most sensitive and musically subtle performances to the 2019 CMA Awards on Wednesday night (Nov. 13), taking the stage at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville to deliver an emotionally powerful rendition of her current single, "Homecoming Queen?"

Ballerini dressed simply in a low-cut bustier with matching black pants, and accompanied herself on guitar for a stripped-down version of the heartfelt ballad — just as it was originally written. The audience swayed along with her unvarnished take on the song, allowing Ballerini to show off the songwriting chops that power the feel behind the single.

The song is the lead single from Ballerini's upcoming third album, the details of which she has not yet revealed. Ballerini offers fans some insight into her own insecurities in "Homecoming Queen?," singing, "What if I told you the world wouldn't end / If you started showing what's under your skin / What if you let 'em all in on the lie / Even the homecoming queen cries."

The track is accompanied by a powerful video in which Ballerini performs the song with no makeup in a remarkably vulnerable move. The singer-songwriter says her upcoming album will showcase her most vulnerable material to date.

Though she is happily married to country singer Morgan Evans now, Ballerini tells Nashville's Tennessean newspaper, “I’m writing the most heartbreaking songs I’ve ever written because I understand what went wrong before now. I think the older I get … the more confident I feel about writing that kind of stuff. I write my songs, and I play guitar, and I write about what I'm going through. I’m just really excited to clean the slate again."
