Kevin Fowler Spoofs Country Music in ‘Sellout Song’ Video [Exclusive Premiere]
Kevin Fowler doesn't exactly bite the hand that feeds him in his new video for "Sellout Song," but he does give it a playful slap.
Fowler is currently at work on a new album, and he recently gave fans a taste of the new music via his official website. One of the new songs is "Sellout Song," which takes a comical look at contemporary country music. The track features Zane Williams, and it has received so much airplay on SiriusXM's The Highway that the Texas country icon decided to move up the release of the accompanying video, which is premiering exclusively via Taste of Country.
"It's a selllout, sellout song / So catchy even haters sing along / Put your hands up in the air / The lyrics suck, hey, no one really cares," Fowler sings in the chorus.
Fowler's sense of humor has been well established, but he sometimes uses his humor to make serious points. That's certainly the case with "Sellout Song," which casts Fowler as just another dissatisfied country fan wondering what's gone wrong with the music he knows and loves as he's watching a video that could just as easily pass for a rap artist. The video features plenty of hot chicks and bling in a hilarious send-up of the direction country has taken over the course of the past few years.
"This song isn't really making fun of any artists," Fowler clarifies. "It mostly pokes fun at an industry that tries to tell artists how they should look or what songs they should record. It's a fun song about making fun of ourselves as an industry. It's not mean spirited. It's humor. After all, if you can't make fun of yourself who can you make fun of?"
