Taylor Swift Isn’t Done Talking About the Mid-Term Elections
Taylor Swift's emergence as a political commentator was not a one-and-done Instagram post. The singer has again turned to social media with a message aimed at first-time voters.
This time, the country-turned-pop singer didn't pick sides. Instead, she reminded voters about early voting, even linking to a chart at Vote.org that shares each state's early voting calendar. "It makes it so quick and easy to go and cast your vote before November 6," she writes, adding, "Early voting starts today in Tennessee and goes to Nov. 1."
Swift made it clear last week that she'll be voting for two Democrats in the Tennessee races for the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives. On Oct. 7 she shared her reasons for opening up about politics, saying she values equal rights above all else and for that reason, she was choosing Phil Bredesen over Republican Marsha Blackburn. The hotly-contested race has narrowed, according to a recent article in the Tennessean. It's not clear how much Swift influenced that, but she did drive people to register to vote.
Response to Swift's first-time endorsement came quickly, with potential voters on both sides debating her claims and how she chose to make known her views on politics. Even President Trump weighed in, saying, "Let's say that I like Taylor's music about 25 percent less now, OK?"
Swift paired her most recent message with two photos. The first shows her feet on a wooden deck, with toes painted red, white and blue. The second is a selfie with the singer offering a small smile as she dons a star-scattered tank top. Both are pictures of Polaroids.
