Thomas Rhett Crashes Tin Pan South to Sing With His Dad, Rhett Akins [Watch]
Thomas Rhett surprised Tin Pan South attendees on Tuesday (April 3) during his dad's set at the songwriting festival, taking the stage to perform a special song.
Rhett Akins hosted the BMI showcase, Rhett Akins & Friends, and throughout the night invited pals like Dustin Lynch, LoCash, the Warren Brothers and Bob DiPiero to the stage. Oh, and his son, too.
Rhett and his father sang a snippet of the first song they ever wrote together, when the "Marry Me" hitmaker was just seven years old! "Next thing you know, you've got a song that's good / One that the whole word wants to sing," Rhett belts in the clip above, his father seated beside him. According to the Boot, he also performed his previous hits, "It Goes Like This" and "Star of the Show."
Earlier this year, the rising star received his first-ever CMA Triple Play Award for writing three chart-toppers in a 12-month period. His father was also honored with the award, marking the first time a father and son have earned Triple Play Awards in a single year.
Nashville's 2018 Tin Pan South Songwriters Festival will run through Saturday (April 7). Rhett, meanwhile, kicks off his Life Changes Tour on April 5. The four-month trek starts in Tulsa, Okla., and has Rhett and opening acts Brett Young, Carly Pearce, Midland, Russell Dickerson and Jillian Jacqueline on the road through October.
