Country duo Waterloo Revival have shared how close they were to the shooting that brought a tragic end to the Gilroy Garlic Festival on Sunday (July 28).

George Birge and Cody Cooper played a radio station sponsored event earlier on Sunday. Caylee Hammack and King Calaway also played the food festival in Gilroy, California. McKenna Faith was also there for an unrelated event, and all four country acts marked themselves safe after the shooting.

In a press release, Waterloo singer Birge thanked everyone who called and texted to see if they were okay.

"We had already left the festival at the time of the shooting, but watching videos on the news I could see that it happened right where we were standing for meet and greets earlier in the day," he says. "It's just so devastating after being there, seeing all those happy people, and experiencing how amazing of a day it was supposed to be. Our hearts are with the victims of this tragic shooting. Please pray for the victims and their families."

Three people were killed, including a 6-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl. Additionally, 12 patrons were injured when gunfire started after 5:40PM local time, just as the festival was closing down for the day. Police officers immediately engaged the 19-year-old shooter. He was pronounced dead by early Monday morning, as well. NBC News reports that the festival was within walking distance of his house.

The shooting brings back memories of the Oct. 2017 Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting, where more than 50 people were killed when a gunman opened fire on a country music festival. Jason Aldean was on stage at the time, but dozens of artists and crew members took cover as police closed in.
