Zac Brown Band, Mumford & Sons + More Pay Tribute to Levon Helm at 2013 Grammy Awards
In a moving tribute to fallen drummer/singer Levon Helm, Zac Brown and Nashville producer T Bone Burnett joined Elton John and Mavis Staples to perform his best-known song, the Band's classic 'The Weight.'
The musician passed away in April 2012 after a battle with throat cancer. He left behind a musical legacy that included songs like 'Up on Cripple Creek' and ‘The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.’ He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Band.
Brown and his band kicked off the tribute with a down-to-Earth performance of 'The Weight,' joined by Elton, Mumford & Sons, T Bone Burnett and Mavis Staples.
Brown ultimately turned in the strongest performance, while Staples seemed to overstay her welcome onstage, over-singing the end of the tune in an apparent effort to bring more attention to herself -- which had Bonnie Raitt (among others) looking around like she was unsure why the song had not yet ended.
Still, it was a fabulous tribute to a man who had a major influence on many of the night's winners and performers.
