Maren Morris Is Cooking Up Her Own ‘Flavor’ in Defiant New Song [Watch]
Maren Morris is asserting her independence and individual style in a new song called "Flavor."
The Grammy and CMA Award-winning singer-songwriter previewed the new song at a concert in Milwaukee on Oct. 6, and she takes a defiant tone in the lyrics.
"I speak my piece, don't do what I'm told / Shut up and sing, well hell no I won't," she chants in a bridge that is somewhat of a cross between rap and spoken-word reggae.
Morris sticks to that theme of following one's own path and being true to yourself in "Flavor," which is a mid-tempo, groove-heavy tune that creates a mellow vibe musically to offset the strong stance of the lyrics.

"I'm cooking up my own flavor / Even if it ain't your style / You've only seen one layer / An original can take a while / Making a mess straight out of scratch, think what you think about that / I'm just trying to make good a little bit greater / I'm cooking up my own flavor," Morris sings in the chorus.
Morris is on the road for a fall tour, and "Flavor" is one of what she says is a batch of new songs that she will be test-driving live onstage in front of fans.
It's been more than a year since Morris released her acclaimed debut album, Hero, and it's likely that "Flavor" and some of her other new songs will appear on her sophomore album, though Morris has not yet announced anything in regard to new music. She recently made waves with another new song, "Dear Hate," a song that she wrote three years ago that features Vince Gill. She decided to release the heavy message song after the mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas on Oct. 1, with the proceeds going to the Music City Cares Fund.
"I never knew when would be the right time [to release it]," she wrote on Twitter, "but I realized today that there's never a right time. Hate is everywhere and I'm sick of not doing enough. In the darkest tunnel, there is still love & music."
Morris also joins One Direction's Niall Horan on his new song, "Seeing Blind," and she is set to perform with him on the 2017 CMA Awards on Nov. 8. She will also join him on tour in 2018.
