Maren Morris Tells Howard Stern ‘Girl’ Was Born From Self-Reflection
Maren Morris' latest single, "Girl," wasn't supposed to be a song at all. In a recent, in-depth interview with radio host Howard Stern, the country star shared more about the single, her experience and the 2019 Grammy Awards and more.
"I was really just b--ching to my co-writers that day about what was going on in my life," Morris says. "I was like, 'I want to be friends with this person. We're both in this industry. Why can't we just root for each other and not be competitive?' And then I realized a little bit into when it was becoming a song and shaping up to be one, I felt like, no, this is about me. I'm talking to myself, and I am really cracking."
Morris says, when writing "Girl," she was questioning why she was taking everything so seriously during that time in her life: "I was just really letting a lot of criticism and pressure get to me," she admits. "I was maybe taking it out on this other person, and I realized it was maybe really self-reflective."
Morris, who is currently out on her Girl: The World Tour and recently released her sophomore album of the same name, also performed "Girl" for Stern during her time on his show. The host was moved, and legitimately brought to tears by Morris' passionate performance.

In that spirit of women supporting women, Morris recently began working as a new supergroup, the Highwomen, alongside Brandi Carlile, Amanda Shires and Natalie Hemby. “There’s been a pretty severe drought of women in country music being played on the radio the last 10 years," Morris explains of the group, "and so, I think we’re just trying to show that women can support other women and not be cutthroat and lift each other up.
"It’s been just such a pleasure to be in the studio with those gals," Morris adds.
Morris' love for Carlile and her music specifically was on full display at the 2019 Grammy Awards in February, too — perhaps a bit too much on display, in fact. Carlile's performance of her song "The Joke" during the televised awards show was a star-making moment that brought the crowd to its feet, and Morris was feeling it.
"You actually catch me during her Grammy performance, like, saying the F-word because I didn’t realize the camera was on me," Morris says. "But I was just like, ‘F--k yeah!’” she adds with a laugh.
