Old Dominion’s ‘Make It Sweet’ Will Remind You to Make the Most of Life [Listen]
Old Dominion's "Make It Sweet" is the first taste of new music from their forthcoming third studio album, and it feels good. The song is all about trying to make the most of your time on earth, even if money is tight.
"I know it's a drag, I know it's a grind / I know that a dollar ain't worth a dime / Just tryin' to keep up with the Joneses at the end of the block / I know you get tired, I know you get down / I know you get sick of this soul sucking town / But let's make a little lemonade if lemons is all we got," frontman Matthew Ramsey sings on the song's first verse.
The infectious chorus hits hard with hand-clapped rhythms, memorable guitar riffs and an optimistic outlook as Old Dominion sing the money line, "Life is short, make it sweet." It's an uplifting message that recalls the positive vibe of previous No. 1 hit, "No Such Thing as a Broken Heart" — Old Dominion continue to offer the lighthearted, breezy vibe that fans crave. The entire band penned the song with songwriter Shane McAnally.
"We walked into the studio one day without discussing what we wanted the next step for our band to be," they share via Instagram. "The plan was to write a song and record it on that same day. What happened was something we could never have planned. The words fell out and the next thing we knew, we had recorded 'Make It Sweet.' It’s raw and natural and 100% us. We are so proud and grateful to have the opportunity to share such a meaningful moment with the world."
Did You Know?: The chart-topping "Hotel Key" marked the band's sixth No. 1 hit.
Old Dominion's "Make It Sweet" Lyrics:
I know it's a drag, I know it's a grind / I know that a dollar ain't worth a dime / Just tryin' to keep up with the Joneses at the end of the block / I know you get tired, I know you get down / I know you get sick of this soul sucking town / But let's make a little lemonade if lemons is all we got
'Cause I'm stuck on you, you're stuck on me / I never gotta wonder where my honey be / I ain't saving all my sugar for a Saturday night / Seven days a week I got an appetite / Sunsets like a tangerine / Let's find a road we've never seen / Don't waste another mile or a minute not kissing me / Life is short, make it sweet
Open sky, glimpse of heaven / Take the top off the CJ7 / Let that surfside Santa Ana wind mess up your hand / And let that windshield frame the ocean / Radio keep coast-to-coasting / If we don't get where we're goin', baby I don't care / I'm already there
The days will be long but the years they'll fly right by / We'll never be as young as we are tonight / Baby, ain't that right
Life is short, make it sweet
