‘The Voice': Little Country Singer Chevel Shepherd Makes Big Impact
Monday night (Nov. 19) was another memorable evening on Season 15 of The Voice, with the 13 finalists competing for America's votes. The show this evening had contestants handling a "dedication" theme, delivering songs of their own choice directed toward important people in their lives.
A particular standout was Chevel Shepherd, who on Team Kelly Clarkson represents the season's only country-oriented female vocalist in the Finals round. She wowed both the audience and the coaches with a fiery version of Little Big Town's 2010 single "Little White Church," which showed off her ability to command a complicated, emotional tune.
The song's narration is arguably not easily handled by a younger performer, boasting such memorably seasoned lyrics as "I may be cheap but I'm not free." However, the 16-year-old handled it with aplomb. Making the singer's powerful delivery even more striking was Shepherd's indisputably tiny frame, which belied the strength of the voice coming out of it.
Shepherd dedicated the song to her dad, whom she cited as a classic rock fan. Her performance led her own coach to declare her "magnificent," while fellow coach Adam Levine cited her as "awesome" and "so talented." Seeing as the New Mexico-based teenager is the only female country artist in the current batch, she has the advantage of her uniqueness to carry her on.
The Voice will continue on tomorrow (Nov. 20), with two singers heading home. Stay tuned as we keep an eye on the developments!
