Thomas Rhett Covers Bruno Mars’ ‘When I Was Your Man’ [Watch]
For the first-ever American Country Countdown Awards, New Artist nominees vied for fan votes on social media. Thomas Rhett was one of those nominees, and he told fans if they showed him some Twitter love in the form of 3,000 re-tweets, he would cover Bruno Mars' 'When I Was Your Man.'
Fans quickly started showing Rhett some love on Twitter, re-tweeting over 3,000 times and still going. Rhett held up his end of the bargain, getting to work on a professional studio version of the soulful pop hit, even though he lost the award to Kip Moore. Rhett has never kept his adoration for Mars' music a secret, so it's not a big surprise that this would be the song he would cover. What is surprising is how well he does it -- while keeping his country sound.
The video is a black and white behind-the-scenes look at the studio recording process. Rhett sings into a microphone, only backed by a piano, which allows his voice to shine like you've probably never heard before. The wooden-walled studio is nearly empty except for Rhett, the pianist and of course, Rhett's beautiful wife Lauren.
It may also not be a surprise that since Rhett loves Mars so much, he's begun adding one of his songs to his shows. Rhett, who is currently on the Anything Goes Tour with Florida Georgia Line, is ending his set with a current smash hit. He's covering Mark Ronson/Bruno Mars' 'Uptown Funk' in true Rhett-party style. He dons a hat, a pair of shades and a sport coat for the fun cover. We've even seen some fans tweet that was their favorite part of the show.
