Thomas Rhett Is Male Vocalist of the Year at ACM Awards
Thomas Rhett scored a huge win for Male Vocalist of the Year at the 2017 ACM Awards.
Beating out some of the genre's top male acts including Keith Urban, Jason Aldean, Dierks Bentley and Chris Stapleton, Rhett was shaking his head in disbelief before he headed to the stage to accept his award. The "Star of the Show" singer earned a standing ovation for his win, called the other nominees in the category his "idols" who have "shaped the artist that I am." He also thanked God and the Academy of Country Music.
"This is the most amazing award I've ever received in my whole existence," the singer raved, calling it a "very very humbling experience." Kacey Musgraves and Ty Bentli of the Ty, Kelly & Chuck radio show presented Rhett with the award.
The 26-year-old Rhett also won the award for Song of the Year for his signature hit, "Die a Happy Man," earlier in the night, defeating Urban's "Blue Ain't Your Color," "Humble and Kind" by Tim McGraw, "Kill a Word" from Eric Church, Miranda Lambert's "Vice" and Stapleton's rendition of "Tennessee Whiskey."
Rhett recently told Taste of Country about how his nomination in the Male Vocalist of the Year category took him by surprise, heaping praise onto fellow nominee Stapleton. “The one that really took me by surprise was Male Vocalist,” Rhett remarked. “Everybody knows that Stapleton is forever the Male Vocalist of the Year, so just to be in a category with a voice like that is mind-blowing. So that took me by surprise, and I’m very, very honored to be in that category.”
