Thomas Rhett on Parenting: ‘We Don’t Have Any Idea What We’re Doing’
Thomas Rhett is now a month into fatherhood — he and wife Lauren brought their toddler, Willa, home from Uganda in May, after nearly a year in the adoption process. Lauren is also pregnant, expecting the couple's second daughter in August. It's something Rhett says he isn't quite prepared for — Willa has spoiled them on the parenting front.
“We don’t have any idea what we’re doing at all," he says in an interview with his label, Big Machine Label Group. "Willa’s been home for almost a month and I feel like we kind of got spoiled on the front end because Willa sleeps like 12 hours a night, so that’s not gonna happen when the newborn comes.”
Rhett says that although Willa doesn't quite grasp that she's about to become a big sister, he and his wife are preparing Willa as best as they can.
“Every time Willa will go touch Lauren’s stomach we’ll just be like, ‘Your new sister’s inside there,’ and obviously she doesn’t know it but we’re just trying to keep saying our newborn’s name and trying to get her used to the fact that there will be a sister here in about a month,” he adds.
Nevertheless, Rhett believes Willa will take on the role of big sister well, even though she's not aware exactly what that means just yet.
“I don’t think she fully knows what it means that Lauren’s pregnant, or that she’s gonna have a sister,” the singer told Taste of Country at Country Jam 2017, “but I think once our new child is born, I think Willa is gonna really be her rock and her big sister.”
