Thomas Rhett Beats Emma Stone for Song of the Year at 2017 ACMs
Thomas Rhett almost lost his Song of the Year win for "Die a Happy Man" at the ACM Awards to actress Emma Stone from the hot film La La Land, but thankfully the card was wrong.
Presenters Nancy O’Dell, host of Entertainment Tonight, and magician David Copperfield tried to announce the winner for the category, but — as a callback to the Oscars Best Picture snafu earlier this year — O’Dell was surprised to see “Emma Stone - La La Land” written on the card. She handed it to Copperfield, who read it out loud and showed the camera that, indeed, was what it said.
Good thing there was a magician on hand to sort the whole thing out. Copperfield got O’Dell to gesture at the card and it caught fire, revealing the real winner was Rhett.
Rhett and his wife Lauren were laughing at the bit when they realized he’d actually won the award, which honors the songwriters of a tune. Rhett accepted it alongside one of the co-writers and thanked his “beautiful pregnant wife,” whom he said inspired the song. He also thanked God, and got a bit flustered at the mic.

“I’m overwhelmed; I didn’t think this was gonna happen,” he said, before wrapping up his short and sweet speech.
“Die a Happy Man” appears on Rhett’s most recent record Tangled Up as its second single and was a No. 1 hit for the artist. It has been certified double-platinum. Rhett is also up for Male Vocalist of the Year.
