Trace Adkins Performs ‘GOP Theme Song’ ‘Tough People Do’ at Republican National Convention
Trace Adkins performed what at least one news outlet called the GOP theme song after Ann Romney's speech at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. on Tuesday night. 'Tough People Do' is a new song that reminds listeners that while times might be tough, so are we.
Songwriter Jason Matthews ('Must Be Doin' Somethin' Right') takes credit for the song on his website, as well as another by Adkins called 'Walking by Beauty.' Neither is on any previously-released project from the 'You're Gonna Miss This' hitmaker, leading one to believe new music is coming quicker than fans might be expecting. A note on Adkins' website confirms 'Tough People Do' will appear on his upcoming album, before revealing the lyrics.
The Washington Examiner reports that Adkins hopes this new song will become an anthem for Americans angry with politicians and mainstream media.
"Tough people pull themselves up by the bootstraps / When they get hit hard luck and they stay strong / And they keep on fightin' like they don't know how to lose / Tough times don't last, tough people do," he sings during the chorus of 'Tough People Do.'
He takes the media head-on in the second verse: "Those talking heads on CNN / Say we'll never get out of this hole we're in / The price of gas is up and the markets down / And there's a bunch of empty houses in every town." The song is not available for download at this time. A representative for Adkins says the song was not offered as a theme for a political party, but as an all-American song about overcoming tough times.
