Willie Nelson Spoofs Donald Trump, 2016 Election in New Song
Willie Nelson's upcoming album will feature a satirical song that was inspired by Donald Trump and the 2016 presidential election.
Nelson tells Rolling Stone that he's written a song titled "Delete and Fast-Forward" that he will include on his next album.
"You can't watch TV without seeing something about the inauguration," the 83-year-old country icon says.
Nelson voiced support for Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton during the bitterly-contested 2016 elections, but he also expressed skepticism about the entire process, calling it "the funniest thing I've ever seen in my life" in March of 2016.
"I’ve seen the circus a few times, but this beats any circus I’ve ever seen," Nelson said, adding, “Seems like they’re just tearing each other down ... They can’t wait to say something negative about somebody and then they still want us to vote for them.”
Here's What Country Stars Said About the 2016 Election
The lyrics to "Delete and Fast-Forward" pick up on that thread, saying, "Delete and fast-forward, my friend/ The elections are over and nobody wins/ But don't worry too much, you'll go crazy again/ Delete and fast forward, my friend."
When Rolling Stone suggests that the song may be fast-forwarding four years, Nelson simply replies, "Yeah."
The upcoming project is titled God's Problem Child, and it's set for release in April. Another humorous track is "Still Not Dead," which was inspired by several internet death hoaxes Nelson was subject to in 2016.
"I got up two or three times in the last couple of years and read the paper where I'd passed away," he says. "So I just wanted to let 'em know that's a lot of horses--t."
Though we can probably expect not to see Nelson at Trump's inauguration, his good friend and collaborator Toby Keith has been announced as one of the performers at the President-elect's Make America Great Again! Welcome Celebration on Jan. 19, the day before Trump is slated to be sworn in as the 45th president of the United States.
Lee Greenwood will also perform, marking the fourth time he has been involved with a presidential inauguration. Former Little Texas vocalist Tim Rushlow, Lonestar singer Richie McDonald and Restless Heart’s Larry Stewart are also scheduled to perform together at the event as the Frontmen of Country, while Big & Rich and Rascal Flatts lead singer Gary LeVox will perform at other functions related to the inauguration.
