Rising country superstars Dan + Shay celebrated early Sunday night (April 7) at the 54th annual ACM Awards in Las Vegas by receiving the first award of the evening.

The duo, who became ubiquitous on country radio in late 2018 and early 2019 with their No. 1 hit "Tequila," won Song of the Year for that very song at the 2019 ACMs at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

"Thank you to country radio for playing this song," Dan Smyers, who wrote the song with Nicolle Galyon and Jordan Reynolds, said from the stage in his acceptance speech. "Everybody in country music, thank you so much for accepting us into this family. This is a dream come true for us. We love you. Cheers!"

Other nominees for Song of the Year included "Break Up in the End" by Cole Swindell, "Broken Halos" by Chris Stapleton, "Meant to Be" by Bebe Rexha featuring Florida Georgia Line, "Space Cowboy" by Kacey Musgraves and "Yours" by Russell Dickerson.

"Tequila" – a polished, mid-tempo, pop-country heartbreaker – is the biggest song of Dan + Shay's career, and the Song of the Year award solidifies their presence in country music both commercially and critically. The duo also won the second award of the night for Single of the Year.
