Dolly Parton to Be Honored by Her Hometown Again in 2017
Dolly Parton is set to be honored by her hometown of Sevierville, Tenn. for the thirteenth year.
As a way to pay homage to Parton's incredible career as a songwriter and musician, the Mountain Soul Vocal Competition is an event that takes place every year. The 2017 competition will feature a variety of contestants who are asked to sing one of the legend's songs in a style all their own. Performers come from a wide range of musical backgrounds, ranging from bluegrass to rap.
It is allegedly the only vocal competition in the world dedicated solely to Parton and her gift as a songwriter. “This competition is truly unique and draws competitors from all corners of the United States," Chamber Marketing Director and event organizer Amanda Marr says in a press release. "Since Dolly Parton is Sevierville’s hometown girl, holding a competition that honors her songwriting ability was a natural fit for us.”
The competition features two categories in the 13 and older range and 12 and under division, with a total of 30 contestants between them. The winners receive cash and prizes in addition to a recording session in Nashville. A judging panel will select 20 contestants in the 13 and up category and 10 in the 12 and under based on auditions they receive via mail. The deadline to submit is April 7. The competition takes place at Bloomin’ Barbeque & Bluegrass in Sevierville, next to a bronze statue of Parton, on May 20.
Parton has always been a strong supporter of her home region, recently hosting the Smoky Mountains Rise telethon to help families affected by the devastating wildfires that ravaged through Gatlinburg, Tenn. in December of 2016.
