Keith Urban Has Opry Crowd Sing Carrie Underwood’s Part on ‘The Fighter’ [Watch]
Always the entertainer, Keith Urban decided to spice things up during a performance at the Grand Ole Opry recently. Seeing as his usual duet partner, Carrie Underwood, wasn't on hand, Urban asked the audience to step in and sing her parts on "The Fighter."
The country superstar kicked things off by charming the crowd with his impressive guitar skills on the opening chords, and then he nailed the first verse with his smooth vocals, offering a stripped-down version of the hit. The crowd didn't miss a beat when it was their turn to sing, jumping right in on the chorus, echoing Underwood's lyrics "What if I fall / What if I cry / And if I get scared" to Urban from their seats.
They also sang every correct note during Underwood's breakdown toward the end of the song before Urban switched up the last chorus and sang, "Hey Opry, I'm gonna be your fighter, baby," eliciting cheers from his new collaborators. The audience couldn't have been happier to participate with the superstar, even giving him all of the credit with a standing ovation.
Urban got creative with the duet during a recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, too, when he invited Melanie C. — a.k.a Sporty Spice — to sing the track with him.
"The Fighter" was inspired by a conversation Urban had with his wife, Nicole Kidman, when they first began dating, in which he promised her he'd always be there for her when times were tough. The song is obviously resonating with fans, as it currently sits in the No. 2 spot on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart.
